Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 6th graders from East Oakland that come from various racial, social and economic backgrounds and communities.
The students in my classes are English learners, newcomers to the country and over 90% of students are reading far below grade level.
My Project
As struggling students get to practice using their reading abilities, having access to a wide variety of books at their reading level will not only help their comprehension, but also their confidence as growing readers.
Access to graphic novels and early chapter books will help support our classroom lessons so that students gain the necessary vocabulary to better process and retain the information that they will need to learn throughout their life.
In combination with targeted language lessons to students, these texts will provide the specific fluency practice the students need but in a way that is engaging and understandable.
The goal of this project is to provide books and literature that engage students while meeting the needs of struggling learners in upper grades.
