Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 3/4 grade students with multiple disabilities and orthopedic impairments, at a school located in East Los Angeles, California.

The majority of my students are non-verbal and have limited motor movement which impacts their ability to progress in the general education curriculum to such a degree that their instruction is based on the alternate achievement standards using the alternate curriculum.

My students require supports such as small class setting, hand under hand assistance, verbal/visual prompts and cues, all work broken down into smaller steps with continual repetition, simple short language, pictures to help express wants and needs, and simple one step directions.

My Project

The majority of my students are non-verbal and rely on picture exchange to communicate. Many of the images that are used are printed and laminated so they can be used by all my students. My students complete activities such cut and paste, and grabbing and sticking images to designated areas with the use of velcro. My students also require adaptive equipment such as adaptive scissors, pencil grips, and holders to help them learn and work on projects in the classroom. My students learn best through much multi-sensory and kinesthetic activities. Donating will help supply my students with material/equipment that will help them succeed throughout the school year.

"Special education doesn't mean that a student is incapable of learning, it means that they may need different supports in order to succeed."
