My Students
My kids are a close-knit group, many of which come from socio-economically challenged families living in a small town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. 54% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Our school does a great job in preparing our students for high school, college, and beyond, both academically and socially.
They are a high-energy bunch who have a world of potential. They keep me on my toes and I love teaching them! I want to be able to provide them with all the tools they need to be successful.
My Project
Our school library is out of commission due to a recent fire, with almost all of our school library books unusable with smoke damage. Since then, all of our students have had to depend on our classroom libraries for books. Many of my students are struggling readers, and aren't interested in reading novels because they are just too difficult for them.
For my struggling readers, graphic novels have been perfect for getting them interested in books!
The award-winning graphic novels from TOON Books are perfect for my struggling readers, capturing their interest with their comic book approach while presenting mythology and other classic themes in an easy-to-read format. I have often been able to get a reader interested in a graphic novel who has turned off to reading anything. Once these readers discover that I not only allow them to read what they consider "comic books", let alone, I encourage it, they can't seem to get enough of these graphic novels!
