Every Buddy Counts - Exploring critical math concepts using Everyday Counts Calendar Math. I am a first grade teacher who teaches a diverse group of students that exhibit a wide range of learning styles and developmental abilities. My class is composed of twenty students that are between the ages of five through seven years old. I have twelve boys and eight girls in my class. Two boys and one girl have limited English language skills. These children are mainstreamed into the regular classroom setting. To meet their needs, hands on materials and visuals are a must for every lesson. My school is also a school of inclusion. This means that children with special needs are mainstreamed within the regular classroom setting. I am an accomplished teacher who promotes cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and linguistic development for my students. I do this by providing a variety of meaningful content experiences and by organizing and orchestrating the classroom environment in ways that best facilitate the development and learning of my students. However, this is a daily challenge for me due to teaching in a mobile classroom. At times, classroom lessons and activities are limited because the needs of some children in the class may reach levels of exuberance that may not be appropriate to the space provided in my classroom. One side of my classroom is designated to the interactive math calendar. It is used on a daily basis during our math block. In a mobile classroom this is an enormous amount of classroom space to allocate to any given classroom activity. I use this best classroom practice for teaching math concepts because it allows students to discover and explore mathematical concepts over time with continuous review. It has proven to be an effective way to maintain skills and an understanding of critical mathematical concepts. By presenting appropriate mathematical concepts orally, visually and kinesthetically, each child can move the information into long term memory in a manner that works best for him or her. At this time I am in need of additional resources to provide "Every Buddy" the opportunity to count and interact during calendar lessons. I am in need of resources to enhance my interactive math calendar. I need the items contained in the Everyday Counts Calendar Math Kit to provide me with the materials that will continue to help build key math concepts in addition to promoting activities that will build upon my students prior knowledge and experiences. Items in the kit such as, the teacher guide, counting tape, class set of clocks, coin counters, graphs, and other elements that change throughout the school year help students analyze data, see patterns, explore math relationships, prepare for algebra, and provides them opportunities to communicate their thinking to the teacher and each other. You can help keep students motivated and interested as they learn mathematics concepts through activities that engage them, allow them to explore, make and test conjectures and apply their mathematical understanding. The continuous learning experience has been instrumental in increasing student math proficiency and test scores at many schools throughout the country. Your contribution can help build a solid mathematical foundation of learning for my students.
