My students need fun books, like "Dr Suess" books, "Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?" and "The Very Lonely Firefly" by Eric Carle, to get them excited about reading!

My Students
Did you have a favorite book when you were in 1st grade? Did you read it over and over again?
My students live in a high-poverty area in South Central Los Angeles.
They are bombarded by challenges that children should not face. Despite these challenges (violence, drug abuse, gangs), they come to school excited to learn. They are amazing and I'm so lucky to have them as my students.
My Project
I try to foster an environment in our classroom where reading is fun and exciting. To do this, we need good books. Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, and Tedd Arnold books help to get kids excited about reading. When we read books by the same author or illustrator, my students just beam. "Eric Carle, I know him!" They make connections and see patterns across an author's work. Dr. Seuss books are great at this point in first grade because they can read them! They can use their knowledge of the letter sounds to read. Students also love the rhythm of the language in Dr. Seuss books. Eric Carle (and Bill Martin Jr. for some the books) uses the feature of repeated text and his illustrations are so distinctive. This is perfect for early readers! Students don't become as frustrated when they can predict what the text will be. Tedd Arnold's Fly Guy books are hilarious and play with language making the students think about what they are reading.
Seuss has been inspiring children since the late 30s.
Carle since the late 60s. And Arnold since the late 90s. Arnold has even said that Seuss was one of his influences! I want my students to be inspired and I have no doubt that these books will help do that. Please help my students be inspired! They have the drive and the excitement. They just need more books!
