My Students
For many of our 5th graders, my class is the first time that they ever get to study the rich and complicated history of our country. They know little about the heroes and villains that have shaped the dramatic tale that is the story of the US. Bringing this story to life is my job and my passion.
Our students have dedicated themselves to climbing the mountain to college in a way that is remarkable for 10 and 11 year olds.
They go to school an extra three hours a day. They go to Saturday school twice a month. They do an hour or two of homework every night and complete a rigorous academic course load. In addition to the academic rigor, they are constantly evaluated by a behavior paycheck system that holds them continually accountable for their actions.
All of these extra measures are in place to help our students defy the statistics of their environment. Our students make no excuses about their neighborhood, and they are much more interested in showing you where they will finish, instead of where they started.
My Project
To help our students overcome that the achievement gap that our students are in, I have tried to make every part of my classroom into a resource that the students can constantly refer to and grow from.
We need posters, time lines and maps about major events in US History, such as the Civil War, The Progressive Era and the Harlem Renaissance covering my walls, so our students can start to catch up. My teaching style needs these kinds of extra resources, as I am constantly questioning my students and trying to make connections between what we are learning, what we have learned and what we will do in the future. The goal of this style is to never leave my students asking "Why do we have to learn this?"
The more I teach history, the more I appreciate it's value.
I used to be a reading teacher and I used to think that math and reading were worth the most energy. But now, I see students become energized and passionate about their education because of the things they learn in social studies. And let's be honest, without that passion and that hunger, the best reading and math programs will never be able to create a great educational system. Only love for learning can do that.
