My Students
I don't know if you've noticed or heard in the news, but childhood obesity and diabetes is on the rise at an alarming pace. Maybe you've noticed that kids fight and argue more That's where games and activities that require team-building come in. Their fun, get kids moving, & help them get along.
We are a Title One school, which means more than 90% of our students are on free or reduced meals.
Many of them come from single income and/or single parent homes. Our school also serves military children which means many are without one parent or the other for long periods.
Many of our students are obese, have asthma and diabetes or will soon become diabetic without lifestyle changes.
We are in a business district and high traffic area, therefore, our students can't walk or ride their bikes to school, so all of our students either ride the school bus, are dropped off by parents or daycare.
This past year our students were able to make all state standards and made high growth in testing. Our children are eager to learn with the limited amount of resources we have.
Our school is located in an area that has a high crime rate where our students often get a front row seat to rudeness, road rage, and violence, unfortunately, that is often the case in their own living room.
My Project
As I stated earlier, more and more children can't get along today and don't how to handle their differences appropriately, therefore it is imperative that we teach our children, how to work together, to work through their differences, even with those they don't like, in order to complete a task. I tell my students all the time that I have not always liked every person I have had to work with but I had to get along with them and treat them with a certain level of respect or I could possibly lose my job. That is what I am trying to teach to my students through games and activities that involve and require team-building. The more activities like this we can do, the more they will see, that they don't necessarily have to like their partner/s, they just have to work together to get the job done and hopefully they will carry this over with them into adulthood and into the workforce.
As a teacher, I hope to have such an impact on their lives so as to produce adults that become healthy, vibrant, productive members of society.
That they will learn as children, to work with and get along with others of different race, gender, and socioeconomic status.
I hope that when my students leave for middle school, they will have learned that being active will help keep them healthy; there are many ways to be active; and that you may not always like everyone you have to work with
