Evalualuting Evolution

Help me give my students the tools to discover the earth's origins through inquiry and critical thinking. The books and movies we watch will be followed by Socratic seminar and analysis essay, where students assess evolution.

My Students

My students are in the backyard of UC Berkeley, a STEM hallmark; yet, they have little hope of going when they attend school in the most underfunded district in the bay. Just 20 minutes away, my students live in Oakland--an over-stereotyped and underestimated part of the Silicon Valley. This means that we, teachers, have to be "creative" in conducting labs on a $500 per year budget and little technology that will give students a positive experience and prepare students for their medicine, engineering or other desired STEM careers.

This year my class includes two future architects, one future psychologist, two future doctors, and three future mechanical engineers.

My juniors are from all over Oakland, with a lot of curiosity, interest in STEM fields, and potential, but little resources to match.

My Project

How old is the earth? How long do we have left? Can we live on another planet? Our kids need to be critical thinkers of the world they live in. They need to be able to assess how the world works, form an intelligent reasoning of how the world came to be, and see how the great thinkers throughout time have come to create the laws that define our universe.

This collection of movies and books will be part of two scientific analysis projects that speak to hidden figures in the science history, starting with the big question of evolution versus intelligent design.

Students will break into groups to become experts of certain facets, then discuss in a Socratic seminar, and last write an analysis on knowledge gained.
