Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

John Dewey, "If we teach today's students as we taught yesterday's, we rob them of tomorrow." This quote describes my classroom philosophy. As a educator, I feel my responsibility is to prepare my students for the future. Using a robot to pick up trash will be a catalyst for their minds.

I teach at a small school in rural South Carolina.

Our school is a Title One school which means a majority (93%) of our students receive free or reduced lunch. I have a very diverse class of 23 eager to learn 4th graders. My students can't wait for science and ELA because of the innovated lessons connected with technology. You can feel the excitement in my classroom when I use Legos to teacher ELA or when we plan and construct a robot to complete science projects.

My Project

The Lego EV3 robot is Lego's newest robotics kit. The kit combines the versatility of the LEGO building system with the most advanced technology ever developed, unleash the creative powers of the new LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 set to create and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. Our students are used to using the Wedo Robotics Kit and the NXT Robotics Kits. I would use the Lego EV3 kit to teach a unit on recycling and environmental science. We would discuss the importance of being a environmental conscious citizen for our school and our community. Our final project will be to construct and program a robot to pick up trash and bring it back to a base (recycle bin). We will use the ultrasonic sensor to detect the trash, a robotic hand to pick it up, and the robot will deliver it back to base. Students will be able to use the whole STEM approach with this project. They will have to plan, design, test and modify the robot as needed.

"I believe that if you show people the problems and you show them the solution they will be moved to act." Bill Gates.

Not only will this project teach my students the importance of Environmental Science it also lets them use robotics technology to create a lasting impression in their minds. This project will create environmentally aware citizens for the future. Thank you for making a difference in my students lives.
