it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students love reading "By the Great Horn Spoon" after I teach about the California Gold Rush. Our state became what it is today because of the rush to get to California and strike it rich. They are amazed to learn that entrepreneurs had a better opportunity to make it rich than the miners.
I want my students to go back in time and experience the life of a gold miner.
My students will learn what the 49ers had to endure in the 1800s in cooperative groups in different Mining Camps near our classroom. They will research, come up with a plan on which tools to use to pan for gold, and make informed decisions about their discoveries and the hardships they faced as a group. They will then write an opinion essay stating whether it is better to mine for gold or become an entrepreneur during the Gold Rush.
The materials in this project will provide my students with a hands-on experience in discovering gold just like the 49ers.
