My Project
There is never a dull day in 5th grade. We have 29 students in the classroom, most just coming to the United States within the past two to three years. There is not a day that goes by that I don't marvel at how strong these children are coming from situations and places that would test the strongest adult. Yes, they are resilient.
The students learn English quickly and put so much effort into reading and writing English every day.
Highlighters, sticky notes and mechanical pencils are the tools they need when we write.
They translate to their parents to keep them informed about what is going on in the classroom and what they are learning. The cultural diversity in our classroom is inspiring as the children work together. We talk about how we have different customs and yet how much the same we all are. It's a great place to teach and I learn from the children every day.
Whether the students are home or in the classroom, their personal supplies to assist with their learning are essential. No matter how much we start out at the beginning of the year, the supply dries up quickly. With up to 30 students in a single classroom, our supplies can run thin.
DonorsChoose has been so helpful in helping us keep up with our supplies. Students need the tools to perform the academic task asked of them. That feeling of not being prepared or trying to borrow from a fellow student just gets in the way of our students feeling well-adjusted and comfortable to move forward.
