Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are creative and enthusiastic about learning. Since March 17th, my NYC students have been learning at home. Our school community has been hit hard by the public health and economic devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like so many, my students are learning in small New York apartments, sharing devices and Wifi connection. My students are writing research papers while caring for and tutoring younger siblings. Others are essential workers, sharing their thoughts on my video class discussion before heading out to work as home health aids and grocery store clerks. Parents in our community have lost their jobs and are struggling to pay for food while rent and bills pile up. A number of families are ineligible for state or federal aid.
I know that my students need access to healthy, nutritious food and a well-supplied home before they can engage with their online classes.
My Project
Students have asked their teachers with help in securing these essential toiletries and household supplies.
These materials will ensure that my students and their family's basic needs are met - a requirement for engagement in online learning.
While city meal programs and food pantries have alleviated some of our families' food needs, we know that these essential toiletries and home supplies are more difficult to obtain. Your donation will help take care of the essentials for our families -- enabling our students to focus on their online meetings, research projects, and final essays.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
