My Students

Our students are sweet, enthusiastic learners with intellectual, physical, and speech/language disabilities, who stay in our self-contained classroom for all subjects, all day.

We are a Title I school in a high poverty area: one-third of the students in our class are considered homeless.

Several of our students arrive to school dirty, hungry, and unkempt every day.

The first thing we do every day is attend to their bodily needs. We feed them breakfast, help them wash, brush teeth, and try to pull back straggly, dirty hair out of faces so they can focus on learning. All of this preparation requires physical resources, which is where we can really use your help.

My Project

My students need personal care items,combs, bows, belts, toothpaste, a dozen each boys and girls socks, shoes, and healthy snacks such as juice and granola bars to help keep their minds on what's really important: LEARNING!

The bus pulls up and I warmly greet my sweet, bedraggled students as they wrap their arms around my waist, sometimes with a smile, sometimes with their heads drooping.

Some are only too glad to arrive at school, their safe place for the day.

We feed them breakfast, thanks to a special grant our Title I school receives, then walk to our classroom to begin "Ship Shape Time": washing filthy faces, arms, and legs, gently detangling dirty locks, helping brush teeth, providing belts, socks, shoes, and sometimes a pretty bow for the girls, and fixing hair so it doesn't hang in front of their eyes during the laborious chore of learning to read and add.

These students already face challenges specific to their disabilities, so the distraction of hunger, the embarrassment of poor hygiene, and the lack of physical elements of their uniforms only makes their mountain loom larger each day, the prize of newfound knowledge and skills awaiting at the impossible peak.

That's where we need your help: we need healthy snacks throughout the day to help abate their hunger, toothpaste and body wipes to help them feel clean, and belts, socks, shoes, and hair bows to help them feel dressed and ready for their day of learning.
