My Students

I have 8 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime​ to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.

My Project

My school district is starting off the school year virtually and I want to be able to provide materials that my students can use at home with their parents, therapists and teachers. The goal of this project is to have materials that families can checkout on a rotating basis. Families will get the materials for a couple weeks and use those activities for one on one sessions with me or therapists. They will also use those activities at home with their parents to work on IEP goals as well as basic academic goals.

Having materials available for students to use at home will greatly increase the amount and types of activities we can do with each student.

It also helps with data collection for IEP goals. The materials in this project will work on fine motor skills, such as grasping objects and strengthening hand muscles, basic academic skills such as colors, shapes, counting, numbers and letters and sensory exploration.

My students are all on the autism spectrum and have difficulty with communication, fine motor skills, sensory regulation, social skills and learning basic academic skills. These activities will allow more opportunities to work on basic skills throughout each day of distance learning.
