My Students
High school students love to read but it's tough for them sometimes. Sometimes they lack the basic skills they should have learned in elementary school. Sometimes it's just finding a book that actively engages them; so many students WANT to be readers... they just don't don't know what to read!
One of the genres my students express a consistent interest and an abiding love for sustained silent reading period is graphic novels.
They love the exciting stories and artwork. I, in turn, love that even my students at the lowest reading level can pick up a comic collection and feel no shame in reading something that's keyed to their grade level. Unfortunately, our school's media center does not have many books that fit this mold and state funding for any new books has been non-existent in the last half-decade. It's exciting to see students seeking out books on their own time for pleasure reading, but it's also sad that they can't find the books that they love.
My Project
I would like to expand our graphic novel lending library in my classroom for these students by having a small collection of Marvel Comics' Essential titles. These hefty black and white volumes include stories that will engage students, expand their vocabulary, and make them more fluent readers. By having a wealth of interesting titles at their fingertips, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the written word. These books are a great first step toward more sophisticated literature.
Many of my low-level readers have aspirations toward higher education.
Putting books in their hands now that help build stamina can only further prepare them for the world after high school.
