I teach in an urban high school serving approximately 300 students - mostly low-income, at-risk youth. I teach a ninth grade advisory course. The advisory program at our school is a daily class that emphasizes community building,leadership skills, academic advising, and emotional support for our Freshman class.
Our school is a small charter school whose mission is to "...provide an excellent education and create effective community leaders". All of our curriculum, including our advisory courses, revolve around the idea of developing the necessary skills and leadership qualities in a student body mostly comprised of minority, low-income, at-risk students from urban areas around our city. We provide a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and hold our students to high standards of social and personal responsibility. We have been nationally recognized for our work in closing the achievement gap by preparing 100% of our graduates to be eligible for the University of California college system and have numerous awards for our work with English Language learners, low-skilled 9th graders, and minority students.
It is essential that our incoming freshman class be set up for success from the very beginning and as their advisor, it is my duty to do as much as possible to support them. Their culminating project, to be presented in the spring, is a portfolio of all of the work they have done throughout the year for all of their courses. This portfolio needs to be presented electronically(computer file) and in hard copy(bound portfolio folder). Last year, our students were plagued with instances of network failure that would erase entire essays. The week before portfolios were due, our school's computer network crashed and took 37 freshman portfolios with it. An entire years worth of work was erased and our freshman were left frustrated and disheartened.
I am requesting 30 USB drives for our incoming freshman class so that they can safely save their work and transport it between home and school. Your donation will not only allow students to safely save their work and achieve success, but will offer piece of mind to their advisors. Thank you.
