My Students
I have 7 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.
My Project
With virtual learning supplies for this school year have looked very different! My students have been 100% virtual for the first quarter and we are transitioning to in person learning for those who choose. My students with special needs require a lot of support from parents to participate in virtual learning and they are not able to access materials in an online format.
I have been creating individual supplies to send home to students that go along with what we are learning in reading, math and science.
Normally we would share one set of those materials so the amount of cardstock, laminating sheets and Velcro we have gone through this school was more than expected. I love being able to give my students what they need and want to be able to keep making individual supplies because that is what they need to learn. Since we can't share in the classroom those in person will still need individual materials.
I make many materials that I print on cardstock, laminate and then use Velcro to make it interactive so students can work on matching pictures, letters, numbers, counting and a variety of other basic skills. I also laminate materials that students use with science to learn basic concepts. Some laminating materials are paired with clothespins to work on fine motor skills while demonstrating academic skills. These basic supplies are essential in my autism classroom to make hands on materials for students to use many times and master developing skills.
