Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A wise teacher once told me that with just a piece of chalk, a little motivating, and the will, he could teach anybody anything. No disrespect to chalk or wise teachers- but it's 2012-Chromebooks might yield better results faster. I have the will and the motivation. Will work for Chromebooks.

My students are curious and hungry learners who unfortunately, do not have access to the technology available to most students.

Our school is a public urban high school with the 2 majority populations being African American and Hispanic. More than 3/4 of our school receives free and reduced lunch. My class room numbers are typically in the 27-35 students range. We are an under performing school at the moment but have taken strides in the improvement of our school's performance and building of a college prep culture. We believe our kids are finally beginning to buy into the idea of improvement and higher expectations. Getting the tech we need has proved to be a challenge sometimes. (Just take a look at my Frankenstein learning station I've pieced together with spare parts in my profile pic.) As of now, 100% of my students are on some sort of social media. (100% use Twitter) 50% have cpu's at home but 85% have a smart device. 100% have a gmail and 100% have a Google Drive.

My Project

Having these Chromeboks would be a real game changer. Firstly, my dream of finally going paperless in my classroom can finally happen. Considering our entire district has already assigned our students Google Drive and gmail accounts and it is really committed to cloud services, the Chromebook is a perfect fit for our classroom. The collaboration tools Google Drive provides are amazing and I have never had so many students not just participate, but enjoy the process of communicating and sharing out on various projects. It was interesting watching them be accountable for their learning and working together in real time. Even if it's as simple as my student blogging to warm up, or reflect on what we just learned. I love the opportunity of being able to create authentic activities and projects with the most current multimedia and social media available on the web. I want to have live tweet sessions to practice and ask questions about objectives. Not just once a month but every day.

My motivation for implementing tech into my class has been a blessing and a curse.

I've been inspired and blown away with results but very frustrated with the fight of trying to share our limited resources. Technology truly is an excellent tool in closing the achievement gap. My students have enough barriers as it is. A project such as this truly paves the road to creating the multi sensory, hands-on, 21st century learning culture and atmosphere my classroom needs. My kids would love it.
