My Students
My students are a group of 4th and 5th graders in a Title 1 school in Harlem, whose resilience and thirst for knowledge impresses me everyday. Despite the adversities they face, they are enthusiastic about learning and curious about the world!
However, the majority are significantly behind academically!
Currently, only 30% are reading at or above grade level. Of the 70% reading below grade level, the majority are reading at a 1st-2nd grade level, while the rest are reading a year behind.
My Project
I am requesting healthy breakfast foods and snacks to distribute to all my 68 students during this years state English Language Arts test March 28-30. During these three days of marathon testing students spend a minimum of 6 hours completing it. It is a frustrating experience for many of my students who are already performing significally below grade level, are students with special needs or English Language Learner.
To make matters worse many don't have a healthy breakfast in the morning.
Getting this project funded would mean that my students will have the brain fuel and a better chance at showing what they do know.
