This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 5th grade band students recently won a fabulous grant through DonorsChoose for Band instruments with the help of Adam Lambert and his fans. Seventy percent of the students at this elementary school are on the free or reduced breakfast and lunch program.
We've got instruments for our high need students, but no books for students to take home for home practice, and not enough books in class to make sure every child can see a book. Families are responsible for getting their child a band book, but because of finances, many familes never make the purchase for their student. Many 5th grade students at this school have shown an interest in taking Beginning Band. Fifth grade is a great time for these students to start because a new opportunity in learning is still "playing" to them. This year they will be learning what they do well, and what they don't do well - and those discoveries will shape their choices for the next few years.
An ample supply of band books will remove the excuse of not having a book, and not having an opportunity to practice. Each student will gain a sense of ownership over their own learning by having their own book, especially since band meets 2-3 days per week, and students have to be their own teacher on non-band days.

By allowing students to take a book home for study, they will be able to improve the skills that are taught in class, and they will be able to receive encouragement from their families when they hear how the students are progressing.
