My Students
My students consist of 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls who have a love of problem solving and playing Minecraft and Roblox. Since girls are an often underrepresented group in STEM I feel like this is a great opportunity for them to be involved in this process. I am blown away by their level of creativity and problem solving within the gaming arena! Their parents are supportive of their interest in gaming and push them to excel in all areas at school, including extra-curricular activities.
My Project
We started the Girls Who Game Club during the 2020-2021 school year. The club has grown from 10 girls to 24 girls in just one year and has become a community for our female gamers. Girls are underrepresented in STEM and it is our goal to highlight and celebrate females in gaming and other STEM fields to encourage our students to pursue their goals and dreams. Our girls work as a team in Minecraft Education Edition to devise and implement design thinking solutions with a focus on UN Sustainable Development Goals. We would love to be able to purchase jerseys for the Girls Who Game team. We believe custom jerseys with the girls' names on them will help build community, elicit pride, and will help recruit more females to the club for next school year.
