This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Bronx Collaborative is launching an eSports team in the 2025-26 school year! We have a thriving Chess team (recently coming in 3rd at Nationals) and are jump starting our eSports program by adding a digital element. Supporting students who are anxious about tournament play by allowing them to compete from the safety of their Chromebook screens will help us further increase our membership and support diversity in our team. This fundraiser will get us the consoles necessary to add "traditional" gaming to the mix.

ESports offer students the opportunity to gain many of the same soft-skills they would from traditional team spots - collaborating with and supporting teammates, good sportsmanship, frustration tolerance, the importance of practice - without needing to break a sweat.

Attendance and general engagement in school is also shown to be directly increased by having activities such as eSports - which require GPA and Attendance thresholds for participation, just like traditional sports.

Giving students who would not take part in traditional sports the opportunity to join a team supports their social-emotional development; and structured gaming is a great way to help students feel comfortable in STEM spaces. Giving students in a Title 1 school access to clubs such as eSports - without making them pay to play - helps level the playing field, opening doors and showing students that they belong in ALL spaces.
