This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My classroom novels are so old that we have been taping pages back into them for years. Please help my students read the novel they love best every year, Esperanza Rising, with a copy for each student.

There are many reasons why, every year, my students fall in love with the book, Esperanza Rising, and why they beg to bring the books home with them so that they can continue reading after school, but I have never had enough copies for them to do so.

As most of my students are first or second generation Mexican-Americans, and Esperanza Rising is a story they can easily relate to. They love seeing a number of Spanish words as we read about the lives of migrant farm workers during the 1930s as the characters deal with strikes, discrimination, harsh living conditions, and more. They begin to understand what it was like to live during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, and to make connections to their own lives.

By supporting this project, my students will not only be able to read a book they love during class, but will be able to continue reading it at their own pace as the plot thickens. This will allow my advanced students to move onto new assignments and more challenging work as they are ready, and no longer feel frustrated by their less skilled peers.

In the book's beginning, Esperanza's wealthy father is killed by bandits in Mexico; then, a scheming uncle sets fire to her house and family ranch in order to pressure her widowed mother to marry him. Fleeing to California, Esperanza tries to adjust to the cramped, exhausting life of a farmworker. Thanks to a supportive family and network of friends, she keeps hope alive and begins to work for a new future.
