My Students
My students range from ELD (English is a second language) to High Achieving (GATE). My school is in a very diverse part of Los Angeles where students come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
My students love to learn and want to been seen as the leaders among the other students at our school.
They love to use math tools, create their own stories and share their learning with others. My goal is to get them reading, writing and actively learning every day. We are currently distance learning, but they love reading core literature. I am trying to teach them to challenge themselves and accept others for who they are. I want to be able to bring in a diverse range of novels to study this year and push my students to believe in not only themselves but our future.
My Project
Currently students are spending 3 to 6 hours on a computer, tablet or another type of device to attend and complete school work. By providing them with the opportunity to read a physical book verses reading on a screen, not only helps them to practice their reading skills, but gets them to step away from the screens in front of them.
My hope is to provide students with a number of diverse stories to read this year so they will be inspired, uplifted and encouraged to always do what is right within the face of diversity.
I want students to learn from stories of other children who lived in California in the past. By creating that diverse reading class sets and text sets students will be able to experience life through the eyes of other people who have had different experiences from their own.
This novel is perfectly aligned with our core curriculum I know students will be drawn in and engaged when reading the story of Esperanza. Esperanza thought she'd always live a privileged life on her family's ranch in Mexico. She'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home filled with servants, and Mama, Papa, and Abuelita to care for her. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California and settle in a Mexican farm labor camp. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard work, financial struggles brought on by the Great Depression, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When Mama gets sick and a strike for better working conditions threatens to uproot their new life, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances-because Mama's life, and her own, depend on it.
