My Students

I will be teaching 8-13 students in a special education classroom who have varying special needs such as autism, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities as well as adaptive and social-emotional needs. The students are from diverse backgrounds from low-income neighborhoods.

For my students, literacy materials are not just helpful, but provide access to the world around them from now into the future!

In fact, developing literacy is an important essential aspect of fighting oppression! Becoming literate opens up a whole new world for these special education students! In addition, because of special needs, a variety of literacy support materials are necessary to help these students develop and maintain literacy skills.

Help my students open the gate to the world now and in their future and rise above one more aspect of oppression in the world!

My Project

Literacy is essential for all students, but especially essential for English Language Learners as literacy offers access to the world around the students. In addition, literacy is important for special needs learners such as autistic, dyslexic, and learning disability readers to have access to the world around them. In addition, research has shown that not only do ELL learners learn English better when presented with both their primary language and English, but through including Spanish in the classroom, students' cultural identities are confirmed and they feel that they belong to the classroom community and learn better all around. Learning vocabulary is especially important as it is the foundation of making meaning out of words so communication is possible.

Funding these literacy/vocabulary support materials will allow ELL and English speaking learners to develop literacy skills necessary now and in their future, including in future grades and in life beyond the classroom!

Partner with me in supporting all my students in gaining the necessary literacy skills to succeed in school and beyond!
