My Students
My whole life I wanted to be a filmmaker. In fact, I went to film school at USC. Now I have an amazing opportunity to use my skills to give my ESL students a completely different experience. This second camera will provide a more authentic experience shooting a television newscast.
My students live in a high poverty area in Brooklyn, New York.
They come from other countries such as the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, often not speaking English when they get here. It is my job to help them elevate their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in English. This can all be accomplished through video production and it will be FUN. I created my ESL groups for the year, which are rather large, and I realized that I need more jobs in the crew to accommodate all of the students. This second camera will not only provide one more job, it will make the newscast more authentic.
My Project
The best learning happens when you don't even realize it; when you are enjoying the process and when you're involved it happens! I'm requesting a second video camera so that my students can shoot a two camera newscast. The students will write, produce, and eventually edit these short videos. Each video will be a TV news program reporting on an English grammar rule and will be "brought to you by" an idiom. They will not only learn English, but they will learn how to work together respectfully and they will learn about how films and TV shows are produced.
This project will give my students a unique experience.
Hopefully, this will make my students want to come to class and look forward to every day, excited to get right to work. In the face of testing, testing, testing, I want to give my students something fresh. Something they will remember. Please help add to their experience.
