Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with a group of 28 ESL students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. My school is a small school in a high-needs, urban area of the South Bronx in New York City.
My students are mainly Spanish-speakers from the Dominican Republic, who have been in the country for fewer than 5 years.
I also have some students from other Spanish-speaking countries, Africa and the Middle East.
The students are very motivated to learn English and to improve academically this year.
My Project
I am an ESL/ENL teacher at a high-need middle school. My students all need to practice reading, writing, listening to, and speaking English. My beginners need to learn basic phonics and vocabulary, while my intermediate and advanced students need to master reading skills and expand their vocabulary, analytical, and inferential skills.
I currently have a supply of 15 textbooks, all on a middle school level.
I very sorely need materials on all levels of English acquisition, as my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students read on a kindergarten to 4th grade level.
Workbooks, games, and phonics resources will enable my struggling learners to improve their skills and approach grade-level.
