High need ESL population needs reading resources to pass state exams! At a small high school with limited resources, it is important for teachers to be creative to provide already disadvantaged kids with the tools to succeed.
My ESL students are intermediate and beginners who have limited English proficiency. They are in a small class with me where I need to help them build their reading skills in order to strengthen their comprehension in their other literacy based classes. Our school is a small new school with not a lot of money and we really need the resources to be able to give ESL students and opportunity to learn English.
As a skilled ESL teacher, I will create literature circles, reading buddies, and reading and writing workshops that track students' learning. Each book gradually increases in level of difficulty and I do hope to may student's reading level jump by at least 2 grade levels by the end of the year. Just provide me the resources and I'll make it happen! =)
If we want students to learn English and pass exams and really have an equal learning opportunity, allow me to experiment with deep reading with them and help them be a contender with native English speakers! It will make a huge difference to have these resources and improve their reading abilities.
