ESE Students Learning Money and Financial Independence!

Help me give my students money manipulatives so they can have authentic financial learning experiences before they graduate, enter the workforce, and move towards independent living.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Wilson's classroom raised $477

My Students

My students are talented, engaging, daring, and courageous high schoolers who, in spite of their varying exceptionalities (Autism, Down Syndrome, cognitive disabilities, physical, occupational, and speech needs), work hard every day to show growth and learn to navigate the world. They are 9th-12th graders who are not only working on English, math, science, social studies, and functional skills so that they can go forth and spread their wings in the workforce, but they are young adults who will soon have to know how to manage any income earned through workplace programs and any government assistance provided to them.

Many of my students are non-verbal or struggle with basic communication, but they have the same goals and dreams as their same-aged peers--independence is key and they need as many manipulatives and real-life experiences as we can provide before they graduate to sharpen their skills.

Several of my students come from low-income families, some speak multiple languages, and all of them have disabilities. But, they are also young adults who want to do for themselves and take pride in their hard work and experiences.

My Project

Most of my high school-aged ESE students struggle with math concepts and number sense. Because they have difficulty processing financial equations, it is important that we have authentic life-experiences that will mirror what they will soon be expected to do independently. Your donations will provide money manipulatives for learning to identify coins and bills, creating a budget, comparison shopping, going out to eat and ordering from a menu, and setting up a storefront that we can use to practice transactions. The more practice we have before our money is real, the better we will become at work-related tasks and the safer we will become in our financial independence.
