Escape Rooms - Classroom Style

My students need Breakout Kits to to extend and enhance their classroom learning in an exciting, but very challenging way.

My Students

My students are third through fifth graders who have shown promise in reading, mathematics, or problem solving and been placed into a special gifted and talented class because of it. The students come to this class once a week to explore concepts and challenges they would not get to experience in their normal classroom.

They are inquisitive, bright students who want to learn, but who need exciting resources to motivate them to do so.

They need something different than paper and pencil to spice it up a bit.

These students come from three different Title I (high poverty) schools located in North Charleston, SC.

My Project

I am asking for Breakout Kits/Boxes so my students can experience the popularity of the Escape Room movement in a style suitable for elementary schools. These kits bring excitement and fun to learning, but also provide a challenge to really force the students to think.

Breakout Kits not only teach the students required subject area content and curriculum, but also focus on necessary skills such as critical thinking, working collaboratively, and persevering (instead of giving up) when things get tough.

An example of one way I might use the Breakout Kits in my classroom is as follows: When introducing a reading story that is set in the Great Depression instead of just watching videos and reading articles to get background on the Great Depression we could do a Breakout. The students would be surrounded be clues: pictures, journal entries, newspaper articles, etc. They would have to really read, analyze, and dive deeper into the material to find the hidden clues. Each clue would unlock a different lock, and once all the locks are unlocked their Breakout Box would open to an interesting, related reward.

Just think - as a child how much more invested would you be in learning the background and setting of the novel you were about to read if you got to do it this way, instead of the teacher just lecturing you about it? I am requesting 3 boxes so my students can work in groups of 5/6 on identical boxes (that way the groups are not too big and they can really collaborate).

The best part about Breakout Kits is that they can be used over and over again. When I am ready for my next breakout I just create all new clues from pictures, ciphers, articles, etc. and reset the locks to new passwords!
