This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have just over sixty of the most interesting fifth graders you will ever meet. They are funny, smart, caring, and sadly, struggling. Their lives are rough. Even so, they never give up and they keep trying. One group is an ICT classroom with many different learning disabilities and the other is a mixture of gen ed and ELLs.
Most students come to my class 2-3 grade levels behind in reading.
My job is to close this gap in their education before they go to middle school. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay for after school so they can have dinner as well. It is a rough neighborhood but the kids are not jaded. They are lovable and very worth the hard work and effort that goes into teaching at this type of school.
My Project
Let's face it, anything with technology automatically gets students interested. It could be the exact same book, but given the chance to do it on technology, it suddenly becomes "COOL"!
If I can get students excited about reading by having four Kindle e-readers as rewards for hard work and effort, they will work hard to get the reward, and score, the reward is READING!
This is a win win situation for sure. I know they will want to feel special and have the ereader, so they will work hard to get the reward and then they will read on the ereaders and will increase their reading levels at the same time. You can't beat that scenario any way you look at it!
