Incorporating group work on whiteboards in 5th grade math classrooms is crucial for fostering student confidence and engagement. Research has consistently shown that allowing students to stand and collaborate using easily erasable materials, such as whiteboards on wheels, significantly boosts participation among reluctant and diverse learners. These tools empower students to freely explore and correct their ideas without fear of judgment, thereby enhancing their problem-solving skills and overall academic performance. According to Peter Liljedahl's "Building Thinking Classrooms," this collaborative approach not only supports a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts but also cultivates a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable sharing and debating ideas. At this developmental stage, encouraging discussions through group work on whiteboards not only enhances mathematical proficiency but also nurtures critical thinking and communication skills essential for future academic and personal success.
