This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are bright, curious, and full of potential. They come to school each day bringing resilience, humor, and heart—often in the face of serious challenges outside the classroom. Many of them don’t have easy access to books at home, and few have had the chance to see themselves or their communities reflected in the literature they read at school. That’s why I’m asking for a class set of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie.

Right now, we’re relying on a shared digital copy projected at the front of the room, which limits how deeply students can connect with the text.

With physical copies in their hands, students will be able to annotate, highlight, and reread sections independently—skills that are essential for deep reading, critical thinking, and growth. This book is especially powerful because it brings a perspective that’s often left out of school curriculums. Junior’s story of navigating identity, racism, and hope as a Native American teenager resonates with many of my students, who also know what it feels like to live between worlds, carry responsibility too young, or fight to create a future for themselves.

My goal with this project is not only to help my students become stronger readers, but also to help them see literature as a tool for self-discovery and empathy. I want them to feel that their stories—and the stories of people different from them—belong in the classroom. A class set of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" will help make that possible.
