My students need graphing calculators in order to increase the rigor of my Geometry and Algebra class. Our school and my students cannot afford them alone! We need your help.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students light up my life. They are full of inquisitive energy and always crave a challenge. I have been teaching students at my school for five years, and I am always impressed by how well they rise to any challenge. Also, they are resilient. Many of my students go through struggles I would never have dreamed of when I was in high school, and they prevail.
Although students ask me to teach them how to use a graphing calculator, we are not able to meet our students' eagerness for rigorous curriculum due to school and family budget restrictions.
Since I work at a Title 1 school where 95% of students live at or below the poverty line, 100% of my students are students of color, and they cannot often afford the learning tools they need. While many wealthier students would buy their own graphing calculators for math class, my students cannot afford that expense.
My Project
We will be using these calculators every day in my Geometry and Algebra. Graphing calculators give students another way to visualize and grapple with challenging material. Using graphing calculators will also prepare them for Algebra II, Statistics, and Calculus. One way we will use them is to graph and analyze more complicated functions and conic sections that would be difficult to graph by hand.
These calculators give my students a chance at and equitable education.
In many cases, students who cannot afford technology themselves never use a graphing calculator in their high school careers. These calculators are one step in creating more equity for all students.
