Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For most of our students, school offers structure, safety, food, and other things many take for granted. Our incredible school is a Title I school (95% of our students receive free or reduced-cost lunch) with an bilingual population of 95% in a bustling neighborhood. In addition to basic needs, school should offer engaging and meaningful opportunities in learning academics and becoming accepting citizens. Finding the funds and time to gather supplies to create these opportunities can be consuming, but these students deserve it.

These students are truly the brightest, kindest, and hardworking kids around.

With rich cultural backgrounds, loving and supportive families, and multilingual abilities, they work hard to achieve their academic and interpersonal goals and find success. But these students and their teachers do need help. Any tool or project to keep these students interested and motivated is crucial. Thank you for your time and support!

My Project

Staff at our site have devoted energy and focus on anti-racist language, education, and pedagogy. We have focused many staff and district meetings on teaching with an equity lens. We have established universal definitions, studied essays and texts, and have delved into difficult but vital conversations.

We are ready to bring anti-racist practices and understanding of equity to our students, and the perfect starting point is exposure through reading.

In collaboration with our school library, we are collecting a vibrant and authentic collection of texts that reflect our student population and cultures. Our school is created by Latinx, Black/African American, Vietnamese, Afghan, and White students. With this book collection, we will bring student image and identity to our curriculum while developing a love of reading. Many of these stories reflect the backgrounds and cultures of many students as well. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where students not only see themselves, but hear their voices in literature.
