This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the Special Education Department Chairperson, I have had a first-hand glimpse into the academic and social-emotional struggles that teens with disabilities endure. In a pre-pandemic world, my students were fighting against odds to attend school on a regular basis. Many are working well below grade level because of learning disabilities. Their socio-economic standings limit them from attaining the newest technologies and resources that other students have. With the addition of a disability and a pandemic, my students with disabilities and their families have hit the highest levels of exhaustion, frustration, and many are nearing the point of giving up. Our teachers are great. They are doing their best to make daily phone calls and Zoom sessions with our students. They are working well beyond the scope of practice to help these young ladies and gentlemen succeed but that they really need is more equitable access to digital resources. They need Bluetooth earphones, chrome books, and document cameras so that their IEP management needs could be met and they could work on a level, academic playing field.

My Project

Many of my students live in small apartments in housing projects. They share tiny spaces with multiple family members and often cannot participate in Zoom learning sessions. Having wireless earbuds and iPads will help them so much!

Often, housing projects do not have access to strong WiFi signals.

My students share devices with family members or don’t have any devices at all. Their disabilities make learning challenging enough as it is. Moving to synchronous and asynchronous remote learning has created challenged for my students that were already being challenged because of their disabilities
