My Project
School supplies should not be a barrier to completing course assignments and projects both in and out of class. In rural areas, however, socio-economic barriers exist and not all students get excited about the back-to-school supply list of required items for the year.
This project is intended to level the playing field when it comes to students being prepared for required class projects and assignments by equipping them with the materials they need.
Because journal writing encourages creative thinking, offers a transition into class from the previous class or setting, and serves as a space to develop writing skills in a low-key assignment, my students will be asked to write every day of the term in response to prompts or in free-write style.
Using a flipped-classroom approach, I will teach study skill students can take with them into their future endeavors and use vocabulary flash card activities and reading theme identification activities regularly. We'll need index cards and page markers for successfully accomplishing that goal. And headphones for all students will allow us to engage auditory learners though audiobooks while eliminating any financial barriers that may exist for students purchasing/owning their own.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
