My Students

Do you remember being part of an athletic team in school? Looking forward to practice with teammates who were like family? Or maybe, how a bad day would completely change once you stepped foot on the court/field? Without funding my students risk not experiencing this wonderful world of sports.

I teach and coach students between 5th and 8th grade at a Title I charter school.

Our kids come from neighborhoods plagued by some of the highest crime rates and lowest incomes in the city. Each day they show up to school with a smile on their face, ready to learn in order to climb the mountain to and through college. Due to the limited funding our school does not have extra resources to spend on sports equipment. Parents of athletes are asked to pay a fee each sports season which covers referee costs and conference dues. Currently, our wonderful student athletes do not complain about mismatched uniforms, sharing jerseys, or having inadequate equipment. However, my goal as Athletic Director is to have proper equipment and uniforms for all of our sports teams. As a school motto we tell our students to find a way or make one; hopefully, with your help we are able make sports possible for hundreds of middle schoolers!

My Project

Our equipment is used by almost 400 students for Physical Education, recess, sports, and other after school activities. Everything requested will be used by our athletic teams to help them become masters of their craft--whether that is basketball, volleyball, or track and field. Currently, we have one girl’s basketball that is regulation size and two boys basketballs that are regulation size. In order to provide our volunteer coaches with adequate equipment to have purposeful practices the basketball teams are requesting a half a dozen of each size. As an athletic department we also offer volleyball and track. Our volleyball team is asking for a team set of knee pads which will be reused from year to year. Finally, our track team is asking for a set of batons in order to properly practice relay handoffs. Once items become too worn for athletics they will be passed on to the Physical Education classes until they are no long usable.

Studies have shown the positive impact athletics make.

Student athletes have higher GPA's, fewer discipline problems, better attendance and increased graduation rates. For students from under-served communities, school often serves as the safe haven. Kids enjoy staying after regular school hours for practice, games, and tutoring. The need for positive extra curricular activities is clear, and athletics play an essential role in developing character strengths needed to build a better tomorrow.
