Equipment Needed: Tropical Biotope in a High School

My students need efficient equipment for our greenhouse pond. The LED light consumes less energy than fluorescent bulbs and metal halide bulbs.

My Students

Even the brightest, most driven students at our school are still in the dark when it comes to applying their STEM knowledge, to an actual environment. In our greenhouse, they can see photosynthesis and water chemistry, and they learn about animal husbandry and nutrition.

My urban public school draws from all over our city, and we are a low-income school with a very diverse student body.

These students are the highest-performing students in the city, but they come from families with few resources. With the generosity of donors, our students are able to take seminars that take them out of the typical classroom.

My Project

My students will learn to set up and use the equipment for the greenhouse pond. They will learn to understand the delicate balance between light, nutrients, and carbon dioxide, when it comes to hydroponics and aquaponics. The equipment we will be using will allow them to see how technology, including LED lighting, will facilitate sustainable agriculture in aquaculture/hydroponics.

Your donations will allow our students to engage directly with the science they are learning in their biology, environmental science, and chemistry classes.

The greenhouse pond and its flora and fauna allow my students to feel a responsibility towards the living world.
