My Students

What were you reading your senior year? I sadly find that my students are either not reading much of anything or are reading books (assigned by their senior language arts teacher) that I read my freshman or sophomore year. They are often four years behind reading what other college-goers read.

Living in Hawaii has its perks: beautiful views, gorgeous weather, and plenty of recreational activities.

However, it is shocking how few experiences my students have beyond their own community. Few of them have been off the island, and even fewer have been to the mainland United States. Almost none of them have been to another country. This lack of breadth in exposure, not to mention the high incidence of poverty in the community in which I teach, causes them to miss out on so much. The ramifications of their closed-off lives include much smaller vocabularies, no point of reference for global issues, and a near-complete absence of complex, independent thought. In addition, education at this school tends to encourage complacent thinking and doing what you are told without question. They need to question!

My Project

Paradise Lost by John Milton is a perfect example of an independent thinker's piece of literature. My students will compare the origin and fall story in the Bible with that told by Milton. They will experience the beautiful language of an epic poem told in blank verse. Finally, they will grasp the concept of literary allusion, a topic that few students at the school ever learn. As they read, they will practice their own blank verse poetry. In addition, students will write literary analysis papers to bring out the themes in Paradise Lost. This will truly prepare them for college next year. The students will be fascinated by the details Milton uses to describe Eden, Adam and Eve, as well as Satan. These images will be new to some, but for many, they will already have a picture of them in their own minds. Think of how eye-opening it will be for them to compare their preconceived notions of the origin and fall story to Milton's. I look forward to the rich discussions I know we will have.

My school sometimes sends our best and our brightest to college on a neighboring island only to find them working a menial job in the community after only one failed semester.

They need the reality of college work to fully appreciate what their journeys will demand of them next year. With the support present in a high school setting, they can master necessary literary analysis skills before they are on their own. They will become better readers and writers, and most importantly, better thinkers.
