My Students
Making science meaningful is a crucial step in capturing students' attention. By involving my students in the exploration of current environmental issues, I hope to increase their awareness of steps they can take as responsible citizens to protect our planet and its valuable resources.
I teach fifth grade in a small rural school in North Carolina.
I am responsible for science instruction for all 50 fifth grade students. My students have limited outside experiences, as many come from lower socioeconomic families. I try to provide a plethora of experiences for my students, with literature and hands-on activities, to make science come alive and spark their interest in learning more about their world.
My Project
I use literature in every subject area and know that a quality book can spark an interest in a topic for a child who may have otherwise ignored an issue. The books selected for this project will provide students with an opportunity to explore water pollution, overfishing, and global climate change, as well as steps we must take as responsible citizens to conserve water and protect it for our future generations.
As we read the novels, we will participate in a variety of water quality experiments to test the condition of water within our own watershed. I am hopeful that these experiences will lead many of my students into careers in science and develop a life-long love for conservation.
Protecting our planet is no laughing matter.
The sooner we can educate our students about the appropriate steps to take to protect our valuable resources, the better off we will all be in the future. "Environmentally Speaking" seeks to channel students' interests towards water conservation and learning more about how global climate change can affect everyone. I know the materials will be useful to my students and can make a change in how they approach conservation issues now and in the future.
