Environmental Wellness = Influencing the Spaces We Occupy

Help me give my students a fresh feel by making over our very small communal space with seating and tables that invites conversation and connection.

My Project

Our academy is an alternative public school for about 200 students in 6th through 12th grade. Our main building was constructed in the 1940s. It has character, but it also shows its age. The main building has five classrooms, a gym/cafeteria and a very, very small communal space that also happens to be our primary hallway. There are four metal benches for student seating and students often opt to sit on the floor of that space while eating lunch. Eight other classrooms are housed in modulars on campus.

Over 80% of my students in my Nutritional and Wellness class did not believe they could influence their environment.

As we explored Environmental Wellness specifically, it became clear that students felt they were relegated to the current state of things, from their physical school environment to the state of the world around them. Students were sent to explore our campus and identify what they would change about the physical space if they could. They were encouraged to dream big! Administrators became aware of this impromptu adventure and encouraged students to create a wish list for Donors Choose. My hope, as I have these students year after year, is to help them see that they absolutely can influence their physical environment and from there, support them in shaping the culture and social climate of our magical, often overlooked, little school.

I know that our ask is triple what is recommended by Donors Choose. However, these students are so accustomed to hand-me-downs and making-do that I am eager to see them feel heard and seen and celebrate receiving quality, lasting furnishings. The crates/cushions/fabric are to create portable seating and storage. Seating was selected to accommodate bodies of all size. Students are advocating for fidgets, coloring pages, and markers in the communal space as well.
