Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school. Many students get free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and may only get the two meals a day they receive at the high school. Many of my students are also English language learners or already speak two languages. My students are filled with personality and many have experienced hardship no sixteen-year-old should have experienced.
My students bring enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and imagination to class on a regular basis.
Our campus has a strong sense of community; we really are a family. We even have a supper program where students can eat dinner after school for free.
My Project
We are currently distance learning at my school. We had plans to go to a hybrid model in January but that has changed because we have moved to the purple tier. Even though this was a bit of a mental set back for the teachers and students, we are still doing our best to keep things engaging and fun. My students need more lab materials for both their learning at home and for whenever we return back to the classroom. So far every quarter I have been sending students a bag of lab materials that they pick up and we meet online and do labs together. I have received so many materials from donorschoose and other organizations that has made this possible. The students love it so much.
During quarter 3 we will cover soil studies and they will need the soil samples, pH test, nitrate test, potassium test, and phosphorus test to check for soil properties.
My students also do independent investigations where they design their own experiments and perform them. It is going to be extremely difficult this year since we are learning at home longer than expected. However, they still need materials to finish their projects like the water quality and atmospheric quality test kits.
We also need a third drone. So far from DonorsChoose we have received 2 drones from other projects. Each of my classes are 38 students, so having 3 drones will make the groups smaller. We are using these to study animal populations and habitat surveys. The goal is to get a few more.
More than half of students from low‑income households
