My students need virtual reality tools such as an iPad and Google Virtual Reality glasses to see the world's environments and design our own school green space.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom everyday full of life, ready to learn and excited for what is in store for them that day. I ask them, "Who is the best fifth grade class in the whole world?" and they reply, "We are!" I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.
I teach at a Title One school in Los Angeles where one hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My school offers a free after school program until 6pm along with supper for the students.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can, so they can be successful one day. I believe in these kids and believe that they can be just as successful as any other students.
My Project
Our school is on the verge of getting a nice green space! We are removing bungalows and concrete and making space for outdoor learning. Our students have had an opportunity to design an environment which promotes STEM learning and creates scientific opportunities.
With virtual reality tools like Google’s cardboard glasses and the iPad, my students will immerse themselves in a virtual world education.
Accessing virtual reality apps will allow us to travel the world to research a variety of unique ecosystems that exist within big cities. Our inspiration for this project is to be able to walk through Stanley Park in Vancouver or Central Park in New York, and use its' designs in creating our own west coast version on the iPad that will one day occupy our school grounds. My students will research different species of plants, animals and water systems that can sustain life in a big city.
With this project and these tools, education becomes truly interactive in a virtual world because our experiences transcend our class walls. Please support our environmental science effort to travel the world and design a green space in our inner city school.
