Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 4th graders are growing up in communities impacted by environmental injustice—where pollution, poor air quality, and lack of green spaces are part of daily life. Through this project, students will explore how environmental issues like pollution, climate change, and toxic waste disproportionately harm low-income communities and communities of color.

Students will learn about local and global environmental justice movements, study how youth activists have led change, and investigate environmental issues affecting our own neighborhoods.

Then, they will work in teams to design bilingual posters, educational zines, and advocacy campaigns calling for clean air, water, and safe spaces. Their goal is to raise awareness in the school and community, showing that caring for the environment is also caring for people.

We will end the project with a “Justice Fair,” where students present their findings, read their speeches, and display their advocacy materials to families, teachers, and peers. Through this work, students will see themselves as abolitionist environmental stewards—challenging harmful systems and imagining healthier, freer futures.
