My Students
Its been a long winter and my students have cabin fever. Spring is coming and they need an educational project that will get them out of the classroom and doing something in their community.
I teach in a small rural school in West Virginia.
We have about 300 students in grades 9 through 12 and I teach chemistry and physics to 11th and 12th grade students in both professional and vocational tracks. The small size of our school, and the fact that most of our students have attended school together since beginning primary school, makes our student body a really cohesive group.
There is a high rate of poverty, as is true in most of the state, but our school has consistently met annual yearly progress in recent years and this school year we were named a WV Success School. We want to continue this progress by ensuring that our students are actively involved in learning and doing relevant activities that will prepare them for their lives after high school.
My Project
Students will use the equipment in this request to study and monitor the water quality of the river, streams, and wells in the county. These resources will extend the use of our existing equipment to include the basic tests of water quality. We currently have pH meters, temperature probes and a spectrophotometer. With the expanded equipment, students will be able to measure the pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen in the field. They will then return to the classroom lab with water samples and determine the nitrate level, chloride concentration, total ion content and phosphate levels. These measurements will allow the students to make judgments about the health of their local waterways and possible sources of pollution.
Many of our students spend a lot of time in the outdoors, hunting, fishing and hiking.
This project will give them a chance to monitor the health of their outdoor environment and give them a greater appreciation for the relationships between the environment, wildlife and human activity.
