Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teachers have a responsibility to prepare students for a world that doesn't even exist yet. In order to do this, we must prepare students for the economy of the future. The academic demands of the 2018-2019 classroom, for all my students, are greater than they have ever been. My students embody a variety of cultures including Marshallese, Latino, Asian, and African American. Despite their cultural differences, 85% of them also live in poverty - many of whom are first and second generation immigrants. Many are struggling in academics including knowledge and understanding of economic and entrepreneurship concepts. These students need to have engaging and hands-on experiences with these concepts in order to be productive citizens.
My Project
My students will use the heat press and vinyl to learn about entrepreneurship and building a business first hand. Many of my students do not understand the basic principles of economics. Students will have to not only create their business, but also balance their budget, market their business, and determine if their business is successful or not. Students will use the heat press to create t-shirts, that they will sell, to help raise money for our EAST classroom. One of the most effective strategies for increasing students' knowledge and understanding of entrepreneurship of economics is for them to experience these concepts. Students at all academic levels will be able to learn about economical concepts as they engage in hands-on exploration by creating their own business. If funded, this project will allow children in my classroom to explore economic concepts that will help them understand the world in which they live.
