Enticing Students to Read In and Out of the Classroom

Help me give my students bean bag chairs, books, stamp pads, and other materials for their classroom that will get them reading diverse literature in comfortable space.

My Students

My students are hard-working, inquisitive, and want to succeed.

Our Middle School is unique because it brings together students of all different cultures, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds, resulting in a high level of diversity within a single classroom.

They report feeling safe and supported at this school, and in this community. Students are enthusiastic about their schoolwork and the many opportunities that they encounter in this middle school.

I have a variety of students within my five classes, especially considering backgrounds (30% Hispanic, 30% Caucasian, 20% African American, 20% Asian) and reading levels (measuring from second grade proficiency all the way to college-level) and need texts to support each of them. The intention of this project (as one that engages both visual learners and a variety of identities) is to bring together as many of these audiences as possible.

My Project

Students need literature that fits their background, reading level, and interest at the time. Several of the fourteen books in this project touch students that are looking for more intense literature, literature that reflects the identity they have, and literature that is not overwhelming in length. I know for a fact that students enjoy, and request, the books in this project, and I could not be more excited to put fantastic texts in their hands. In addition, there are a few other items, including the stamp pad and LGBTQA+ pride flag, that add to the culture of literacy and identity in our classroom. The stamps for our writings in the beginning of class signify completion and full effort, while the flag confirms what we talk about consistently in class--equality, understanding, and diversity.

Both literary elements of this project (diverse literature and comfort while they read) would make the literacy culture in our class so much stronger, and I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

I have never had somewhere comfortable to use as a reward for students of the week to read during Friday free reading time. With a half hour on Fridays, it makes the most sense for students to get comfortable. Other colleagues have couches or special chairs, and I would love to offer these bean bag chairs with washable covers to put into this classroom for students to sit, as a reward, to enjoy their texts while they read.
