Enticing Reluctant Readers

My project needs 20 graphic novels.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Halstead's classroom raised $530

This project is fully funded

Our high school has a 15 minute sustained silent reading period for the entire student population everyday and we are in desperate need of high-interest novels for the students.

Many students at our school come from print-poor households, have never owned a book themselves, and don't know how to choose one that will interest them. We provide each classroom with a book cart for students without their own reading material, but it is filled with books that we got free at library sales, that don't necessarily entice the reluctant readers. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to enhance the choices with books that students would pick out.

Graphic novels have come into their own as a literary source, and are an excellent way to interest new readers, especially boys. The books that I am requesting are all recommended by English teachers and go far beyond a collection of comic books. We know that students with resources already enjoy this kind of literature, but we would like to introduce high-need students to this genre.

Many of the teachers and some of the students on campus already read for pleasure, but we want to hook the students who have yet to learn the joy of connecting with a book that really speaks to them. Having these 20 books on our carts could help foster the love of literature that is the primary goal of our reading period.
