My Students

The diverse group of kiddos that attend PWES come from all over the city of Pittsburgh. Most of our students reside in the Lawrencville and Bloomfield community. I love my school and the district of Pittsburgh public but it breaks my heart that we are so limited in what we can supply to our students. Parents are working so hard to put food on the table and clothes on their back that I feel it is my job to advocate to support opportunities of learning and growth. Our kiddos are going through a transition in the neighborhood with the children's hospital opening a few years ago. The atmosphere is changing and bringing life to a dilapidated neighborhood. Our school is also transitioning through the innovation of STEAM learning. Two years ago our school was faced with the reality of closure until our parents rallied together and fought to keep our doors open. Because of their efforts combined with the staff, we are now a magnet school with a climbing enrollment. It is our goal to improve student learning through innovative thinking and provide them with the skills they will need to enter the workforce.

My Project

The limited resources that are supplied for writing are not conducive to foster early writers. The bland beige paper with faint blue lines makes it difficult for you writers to decode top, middle and bottom lines. It also tears easily not allowing students to correct their work which is crucial in early writing. The writing journals that I selected will enable our kiddos to decode lines and spacing with ease, allow for them to draw a picture to match their writing, track their growth, take ownership in their writing because the quality of the journals are better suited for young writers. I used these journals last year and I was amazed at the impact they had on my students. During district administration visits they were always admired and praised!

The sight word game will add the "FUN" aspect that I am currently missing in my sight word center.

Every day the student work at centers to improve their writing and reading skills while I work individually with students to provide interventions and extensions on a child's individual level. Currently the students complete a curriculum worksheets based off of the sight words they are learning and read a decodeable reader text. This center is one of the dreaded ones the students enter but need to be completed. Adding the game will spark their interest and motivate the students to complete their work so they can play the sight word game.
